Richard Briggs is an English designer currently based in Sydney. The main focus of his work is small scale residential projects, community based projects in the Asia Pacific region and art. All three from time to time infuse each other to form creative, practical and robust solutions to client’s briefs.

After graduating from the Manchester School of Architecture in 1999, Richard worked for practices such as SOM in London, before travelling and moving to Australia in 2004. In Sydney Richard has worked for several architectural studios, including Tzannes and Associates and SJB Architects. With over 14 years experience, Richard formed honbriggs design + interiors in 2010 with Vicki Hon Briggs as a constant collaborator who focuses on interior design.

Alongside these residential projects in Sydney, Richard has a strong interest in social and community based projects. He has been a past director of Emergency Architects Australia (EAA), and spent a year working in the field as part of a rehabilitation and reconstruction program for over 100 schools in the Solomon Islands, following the 2007 earthquake and tsunami. This grassroots experience focused on the construction of a prototype school which won the International category at the 2010 Australian Timber Design awards and the World Architecture Community award in 2011.

EAA also led Richard to Timor-Leste, where a program to improve water and sanitation facilities at primary schools was developed with two pilot project being completed. More recently Richard has been involved with the Rural Schools Development Program which is facilitated by the Office of Kirsty Sword Gusmao, working on projects that improve schools in terms of design, construction and maintenance.

Richard is also a practicing artist, with complex and simple line drawings offering a different way at looking at our built environment. Past exhibitions have included studies of cities, streets and laneways, with a recent mural commission for DEXUS Property Group. This was a large scale work covering over 80sqm of wall at their new headquarters in Australia Square.
